Sweet, this contraption works. Ok, now to clean it up a little. Make it presentable so it’s not so difficult to look at and operate. The cords were a mess, so that is something to take care of… IMMEDIATELY. How? Cable trays, paint… Oh, we were also using a hand torch attached to the floating head. That won’t do. It’s really amazing what a little paint can do to spruce things up a little. If you couldn’t tell, we like green, a LOT.  We added a water table to absorb all the gases that are emitted from the plasma cutting process....

Iteration 1 was a magical creation. A pile of steel and parts were assembled and molded into a working CNC machine. Who would've thought? Well, as with any project, there are always improvements to be made. Several iterations must be performed in order to perfect a design. What was wrong with iteration 1? - The X axis had too much flex. It was only tack welded in the beginning, and we ran this way for some time because it worked...kinda.- The Z axis was extremely slow. Touch and go took so long that I would almost nod off in between...

Lights, camera, ACTION! Before now we’ve had the first two. Well, we cannot forget the action component! Besides, a CNC machine isn’t CNC unless a computer is moving it, aye? Add the motors and Mach3…

Ok, so the HobbyCNC controller board and stepper motors have proven to work excellent on their own, sitting on my tech bench. What is the next step? Well, build a table for them, of course! I decided to start by designing some CAD models of some gantry carriages. Carriages are the devices that have the bearings installed, in which allow all the moving parts to slide freely up and down the axes. The first ones were going to look rough, but I assure you, the important dimensions were within .005″ of an inch. We are able to attain these tolerances...

Cool, now there is a table, some carriages, a couple motors and a motor controller. Next is a gantry! In case you are unaware, the gantry is the main component to a CNC machine. It is the support that spans the X axis, in which all motors and axes are located. A gantry is typically what a CNC kit consists of. Our gantry consists of 2″x2″ 11ga square tubing.  As you can see, it is very smooth!   Alright, so we have an X and Y axis, now that the gantry is installed, as well as the X axis carriage....
