Ok, so the HobbyCNC controller board and stepper motors have proven to work excellent on their own, sitting on my tech bench. What is the next step? Well, build a table for them, of course! I decided to start by designing some CAD models of some gantry carriages. Carriages are the devices that have the bearings installed, in which allow all the moving parts to slide freely up and down the axes. The first ones were going to look rough, but I assure you, the important dimensions were within .005″ of an inch. We are able to attain these tolerances...

Cool, now there is a table, some carriages, a couple motors and a motor controller. Next is a gantry! In case you are unaware, the gantry is the main component to a CNC machine. It is the support that spans the X axis, in which all motors and axes are located. A gantry is typically what a CNC kit consists of. Our gantry consists of 2″x2″ 11ga square tubing.  As you can see, it is very smooth!   Alright, so we have an X and Y axis, now that the gantry is installed, as well as the X axis carriage....

Well, let’s start off with a little background on the topic. CNC plasma cutters… Only the rich guys have one, or someone with a successful shop, right? That wasn’t good enough for us. Tegan and I knew we could find a use for one of these awesome machines. What? We didn’t know. We would figure it out. I looked and researched far and wide for a solution to our desire to own one of these machines. There are tons of options – purchase a pre-made unit, a kit, scratch build, or any combination of those three. I have seen some...
